Why Won't My Laminate Floor Click Together?

When laminate planks will not click together, the cause is almost always one of four things: debris or a chipped fragment inside the groove, the wrong engagement angle or technique for that product's locking system, a first row that is not straight, or a subfloor that is not flat enough for the joint to seat. Damaged locking edges from repeated forcing are the fifth — and once a lock is damaged, that plank edge will not hold.
Work through the causes in order before forcing anything. Hammering directly on a plank edge to close a stubborn joint is how a fixable problem becomes a damaged-lock problem.
Check the groove and the locking edge first
The single most common reason a joint will not close is a physical obstruction: sawdust, a chip of core material from a previous cut, or underlayment fragments sitting inside the groove. The locking profiles on laminate are precise — a few millimeters of debris is enough to hold a joint open or make it close at the wrong height.
Run a finger or a vacuum nozzle along the groove of both planks and check the tongue for burrs. Then inspect the locking edge itself under good light. If the tongue or groove shows crushed, whitish, or flaking material, that edge has been damaged — usually by forcing or by tapping directly with a hammer — and no technique will make it hold reliably. Replace the plank or trim that edge for use in a cut position at a wall.
- Vacuum the groove and wipe the tongue on both planks before re-trying.
- Look for chips of core material left over from cutting.
- Inspect for crushed or flaking edges — damaged locks do not recover.
- Dry-fit two scrap pieces off the floor to confirm the profiles mate at all.
Use the locking technique the product was designed for
Click-lock systems are not interchangeable, and using the wrong motion is a top cause of joints that will not seat. Angle-angle products want the long edge engaged at roughly 20 to 30 degrees and folded down, then the short end engaged. Fold-down (drop-lock) products want the long edge angled in and the short end pressed straight down until it clicks — angling a drop-lock end joint can break the plastic or fiberboard catch inside it.
The installation instructions for your exact product show the intended motion — and they are worth the two minutes, because the same brand can use different locking systems across product lines.
Tools matter too: use a tapping block against the joint (never a bare hammer on the plank edge) and a pull bar at walls where there is no room to swing. Tapping blocks spread the force across the profile; a hammer concentrates it and crushes the lock.
- Angle-angle systems: engage the long edge at ~20–30°, fold down, then close the end.
- Fold-down systems: angle the long edge, then press the end joint straight down.
- Always use a tapping block or pull bar — never strike the plank edge directly.
- If one specific joint resists everywhere you try it, swap that plank: occasional milling defects happen.
The first row and the floor underneath
If joints engage but the row will not lie flat, or each successive row gets harder to close, look at the foundation of the install rather than the planks. A first row that is not perfectly straight telegraphs into every following row — the locking system needs the rows parallel, and a bowed first row (often from following a wavy wall) makes joints fight you a little more each course. Snap a chalk line for row one instead of trusting the wall.
Subfloor flatness is the other quiet culprit. Laminate manufacturers commonly require flatness in the neighborhood of 3/16 inch over 10 feet — check your product's exact figure. Over a dip or hump, the locking profiles meet at an angle instead of in plane, so the joint clicks partially or pops back open, and planks see-saw rather than laying flat. If joints close on one side of the room and refuse on the other, lay a straightedge on the subfloor where they refuse.
Underlayment can mimic this: doubled-up padding, or cushion that is too thick or too soft for the product, lets planks tilt as you work the joint. Use only the underlayment the manufacturer approves, and never stack a separate pad under planks that have one attached.

Why planks click but won't lay flat
A row that closes but rocks, peaks slightly at the joints, or will not sit flush usually has one of three explanations. First, the joint is only partially engaged — listen for the full click and check the seam with your fingertips; a half-engaged drop-lock end feels like a tiny ledge. Second, there is debris under the plank or in the groove holding one edge proud. Third, the planks themselves are not flat: boards stored flat in dry conditions stay flat, while boards stored on edge, in a damp garage, or without the typical 48 hours of on-site acclimation many manufacturers require can arrive slightly cupped and resist seating.
If a plank is visibly bowed or cupped on its own, set it aside for cut pieces rather than wrestling it into the field of the floor. And if many planks from one box behave that way, stop and check the box's condition and batch — a storage or moisture problem with the material is a return conversation, not a technique problem.
Example scenario
Halfway through a bedroom, end joints start refusing to click. The installer has been cutting planks in the same room, and a vacuum pass through the grooves of the next three planks pulls out fiberboard dust — joints click again. Two rows later one end still will not seat: the straightedge reveals a 1/4-inch dip the underlayment had hidden. A bag of patch compound on the dip would have prevented both problems on day one.
The pattern matters: debris failures are random planks; flatness failures cluster in one area of the room; technique and damaged-lock failures follow specific joints wherever the plank goes.
Common mistakes
The biggest mistake is treating the visible symptom as the whole problem. Noise, gaps, peaking, crowning, and moisture concerns usually start with movement, moisture, substrate support, or product-specific installation requirements.

- Using the angle-angle motion on a fold-down product (or vice versa) instead of checking the instructions.
- Tracing a wavy wall with the first row instead of snapping a straight line.

- Forcing a joint that resists, then reusing the now-damaged plank in the field of the floor.
